The Supermarket as Sponge: Forging a Porous Sphere of Affection through Contaminated Ethics

This essay proposes a philosophical method grounded in the everyday. Through an autoethnography of the Tokyo supermarket Niku no Hanamasa, it demonstrates how mundane practices like shopping and cooking can cultivate a “Porous Sphere of Affection”—a fluid kinship with human and non-human others. This affection is not presented as a pure ideal, but as a “contaminated” state, fraught with the ethical turbulence of our entangled world. The work concludes that consciously engaging with this contamination transforms the kitchen and supermarket aisle into vital sites of philosophical inquiry and ethical revision.
